Privacy Policy. Built for sensitive legal matters.
CoCounselor is an AI-powered legal information and drafting assistant that helps you research laws, understand your rights, and draft documents grounded in real statutes. Because the questions you ask are personal, this policy explains exactly what we collect, how we use it, and the controls you hold.
1. Overview
This Privacy Policy describes how CoCounselor Inc. ("CoCounselor", "we", "us") handles personal information when you use the CoCounselor mobile application and related website (together, the "Service"). The Service is currently available for Ghana, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada.
We treat your legal questions, uploaded documents, and generated drafts as private workspace data. We do not sell this content, and we do not repackage it for advertising.
2. Information we collect
| Category | Examples |
|---|---|
| Account information | Name, email address, and authentication details you provide when you create an account. |
| Workspace content | Legal questions you ask, documents and notices you upload, drafts you generate, and your chat history. |
| Region & preferences | The country/jurisdiction you select, theme and notification settings. |
| Billing information | Credit balance, purchases, and transaction records. Card details are processed by our payment providers — we do not store full card numbers. |
| Usage & device data | App interactions, feature usage, device type, operating system, and diagnostic logs used to keep the Service reliable and secure. |
You can use much of the Service without providing more than is necessary. We ask only for the information needed to operate, secure, and improve the Service.
Sensitive information
Because CoCounselor is used for legal matters, the questions and documents you submit may reveal sensitive information — for example, details about disputes, employment, tenancy, finances, health, or alleged offences. You decide what to enter, and you do not need to include identifying details to receive guidance. We process this information only to provide the Service, protect it with encryption and access controls, and do not use it for advertising or sell it. Where the law requires your explicit consent to process special-category data, we rely on the consent you give by choosing to submit that content.
3. How we use your information
- To provide core features: AI legal chat, the constitution & law library, and document drafting.
- To load the correct, up-to-date statutory framework for your selected jurisdiction and return cited answers.
- To maintain your account, process credits and purchases, and provide support.
- To secure the Service, detect abuse, and debug problems using diagnostic logs.
- To send service communications and, where you opt in, email updates.
- To comply with legal obligations and enforce our terms.
4. AI processing & your content
When you ask a question or upload a document, your input is processed to retrieve the relevant statutes and generate a cited response. Uploaded documents are handled in an isolated workspace tied to your account.
- We do not sell your questions, uploads, or drafts.
- We do not use your private workspace content to serve third-party advertising.
- We do not permit third-party AI providers to use your content to train their general-purpose models.
- AI guidance is informational only and may be incomplete or inaccurate; always verify the cited sources and consult a licensed lawyer for decisions.
To generate responses, your prompts and uploaded content are sent to third-party AI model providers (such as large language model APIs) that process the content on our behalf. These providers act as our processors under contractual confidentiality and data-protection terms, may only use your content to return a response to CoCounselor, and are contractually prohibited from using it to train their own models or for any independent purpose.
5. Legal bases for processing
Where the UK GDPR, EU GDPR, or comparable laws apply, we rely on the following legal bases:
- Contract — to provide the Service you have signed up for.
- Legitimate interests — to secure, maintain, and improve the Service, balanced against your rights.
- Consent — for optional communications such as marketing email, which you can withdraw at any time.
- Legal obligation — where we must retain or disclose information to comply with the law.
7. Data retention
We keep your workspace content and account information for as long as your account is active, and only as long as necessary for the purposes described here or to meet legal obligations. When you delete content or your account, we delete or anonymize the associated data within a reasonable period, except where retention is required by law.
8. Your choices & data deletion
You stay in control of your data and can delete it at any time:
- In the app — delete individual chats or drafts, or delete your entire account from Settings → Account. Deleting your account removes your workspace content and profile.
- On the web — request account and data deletion without opening the app at cocounselor.app/delete.
- By email — contact [email protected] and we will verify your request and delete your data.
When you request deletion, we remove or anonymize your account and workspace content within 30 days, except for limited information we must keep to meet legal, tax, or security obligations (for example, transaction records), which we delete once those obligations end.
9. Security
- Encrypted by default — questions, drafts, and uploads are protected in transit and at rest.
- Isolated workspace — uploaded documents are kept within your account's private workspace.
- Access controls — internal access is limited to what is needed to operate and support the Service.
No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to protect your information using appropriate technical and organizational measures.
10. Your rights & controls
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- Access, correct, or export the personal information we hold about you.
- Delete your content or account at any time from the app's account controls.
- Object to or restrict certain processing, and withdraw consent for optional communications.
- Lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
To exercise these rights, use the in-app controls or contact us using the details below. We will respond within the timeframe required by applicable law.
11. International data transfers
CoCounselor operates across Ghana, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada. Your information may be processed in countries other than your own. Where we transfer personal data internationally, we use appropriate safeguards — such as standard contractual clauses — to protect it in line with this policy and applicable law.
12. Children's privacy
The Service is not directed to children, and is intended for users who are at least 18 years old (or the age of majority in their jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, please contact us so we can remove it.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app or by email. Your continued use of the Service after an update means you accept the revised policy.
